Allomet Capabilities

Allomet utilizes a flexible and proprietary powdered metal processing technology to carefully coat 2-50 micrometer-sized hard core particles of any shape with 50-500 nanometer-thin tough coatings to create EternAloy® HNT products.

HNT powders are a unique combination of very hard (ceramics, diamonds, etc.) and exceptionally tough (tungsten carbide, cobalt (Co), etc.) materials that constitute an entirely new class of industrial metal powders with highly-desired extreme wear-resistance performance characteristics.  By carefully combining hard materials and tough materials at the nano-scale in ways never before possible, TCHPs maintain the excellent performance benefits of both material types, allowing the resulting material to possess strength and durability benefits never before attainable.

Although HNT’s are an entirely new category of engineered materials, they can be applied as surface coatings or formed into solid, shaped components using well-known consolidation methods.  Surface coating methods include HVOF, thermal spray, plasma spray and laser metal deposition.  For solid component production, conventional presses, sintering furnaces, and grinding/polishing machines have been proven to work very well. In both application types, HNT’s are able to provide exceptional levels of wear-resistance over a very wide temperature range for high-value applications.

For example, HNT powders can be used to apply intensively wear-resistant surface coatings in various industries.  The extremely high microhardness, strong adhesion to substrates, and low porosity attainable in thermal spray and laser metal deposition coatings deliver significant advantages in performance in demanding environments over a wide range of operating temperatures. With a variety of hard core- particles to choose from, HNT grades offer customizable hardness, toughness, strength, wear-resistance, thermal conductivity, and lubricity, in addition to other desired performance properties.

In the global cutting tool industry, Allomet’s various grades of HNT are used in various tool designs to maintain excellent hardness at highly- elevated operating temperatures, yielding metal removal capabilities and productivity improvements unattainable by tungsten carbide cutting tool inserts.

Perhaps one of the strongest features of the unique TCHP process technology used in HNT production is the wide variety of compositions and sizes of powder particles it can provide. Allomet’s manufacturing technology can meet the needs of practically any critical high-value customer application by combining a variety of materials with property extremes at the nano-scale.

Allomet’s TCHP products improve manufacturing for high-value systems applications where productivity, reliability, and safety are critically important.  Wear resistance performance is recognized as a key requirement in many aerospace, transportation, energy, earthworks, and medical device systems.

Facilities

The 30,000 square-foot facility includes all custom engineered and installed TCHP production equipment, in addition to a full metallurgical laboratory that includes the following:

  • Mechanical testing equipment (Transverse rupture strength, hardness testing, Palmqvist testing, and other related material property testing.)

  • Material inspection equipment (optical microscope up to 1,000x, Stereo zoom microscope and off-site SEM availability)

  • Sample preparation laboratory (precision sectioning, mounting, polishing and etching equipment

  • Chemical analysis capabilities (carbon & ICP)
